Where to use Asiana miles before and after the merger

Updated October 26, 2026

Where you can spend Asiana miles changes on December 16 and 17. Before the merger they still work on Star Alliance airlines; after it, only on Korean Air flights and Korean Air shopping.

Until December 16: Star Alliance deadlines

Asiana leaves Star Alliance at 23:59 on December 16, 2026 (Korea time). To use Asiana miles on Star Alliance airlines, book by the dates below, and at least 3 days before your first flight.

Dates may change; if an issued award is cancelled, miles are refunded without a fee. End dates for Qatar Airways, Etihad and Air Astana have not been announced yet.

From December 17: unconverted Asiana miles

  • Use them on the dedicated Asiana mileage page on Korean Air’s website.
  • Award tickets and upgrades on every Korean Air route, economy and prestige only.
  • Cash and miles: pay part of a fare in miles (from 100 miles up to 40% of the fare).
  • Shopping: merchandise, hotels, theme parks, movie tickets, in-flight duty-free vouchers (member only).
  • Registered family members can pool or transfer miles.

First class, premium economy and SkyTeam or other partner awards need converting to SKYPASS first.

  • Peak season costs 50% more; round trips cost double.
  • Korean Air prestige uses the Business Smartium rate to the Americas, Oceania and Europe, and the Business rate elsewhere (may change with aircraft).
  • Middle East routes, which Asiana did not fly, match SKYPASS: 35,000 economy and 62,500 prestige (one-way, off-peak).
  • Infants under 2 pay 10% of the adult rate; children 2 and over pay 75%.

What changes if you convert

Converted SKYPASS miles follow Korean Air’s chart and can be used for first class and SkyTeam partner awards. In return, partner-earned miles shrink at 1:0.82, and conversion can’t be undone.

How to decide whether to convertSources: KFTC press release and Korean Air’s mileage integration plan (published 2026-09-15), Asiana notices and the Asiana Mileage General Terms (2026-09-15), Star Alliance exit notice (2026-06-23). Airlines may change details; check their notices before you book.
